Quand la Louisiane parle français

« New Orleans : cultural Blender of the Atlantic World »,
Sylvia Frey, Université Tulane

Introductory Paragraph:

This is the story of three intersecting lives and cultures: Jean-Charles, Chevalier de Pradel, a French officer of the Marine Regiment; St. Louis La Nuit, an afranchi, or free man of color, and Carlos, an enslaved Senegalese man. Despite vastly different life experiences, the friction of their meeting in New Orleans played a crucial role in the city’s creative fabric and helped shape the social architecture and the cultural texture of the city in fundamental ways that are recognizable today.
